Videogames Industry Snapshot (August 2025)
From releases trends to layoffs — the state of the industry before GTA VI’s release.
Hello, my fellow gamers!
There’s nothing better than data to reveal meaning and patterns. In this new monthly post, I’ll take a look at the state of the videogame industry and share my perspective in a concise, pill-sized format.
This analysis is based on popularity by number of players, not sales.

Lifetime Top Performers
As mentioned in previous posts, it’s extremely difficult for new releases to compete with the all-time top performers. Looking at the data this month, we can see some titles with sharp declines in their average player numbers.
Performance Gap Analysis
Lifetime Top Games Average: 332,761 players
August Trending Games Average: 20,125 players
Performance Gap*: ~15.5x
This stark difference highlights the gap between established blockbusters and emerging titles, underlining the challenge new games face when competing against proven hits.
*Difference between AVG Players on August top releases vs lifetime titles.
It was really interesting to see a title like Monster Hunter Wilds within a huge drop at the number of players in comparison with Dota 2 (Released in 2013) — I’m not comparing them as they are quite different. But they both had the goal to keep an active community of players playing the title.
Trends by Follower Growth – The Call Effect
Here, instead of player numbers, I analyzed follower growth and consumer reactions during August releases. This view shines a light on AA and indie titles that don’t always make it into the big newsletters but could be worth checking out.
Layoffs
First, my thoughts go to everyone affected.
Sadly, layoffs have become a recurring headline in the industry. Ambitious projects often lead to so-called “restructuring”—a euphemism for letting go of hundreds of talented people.
This month, major studios were the ones taking action. Interestingly, both Epic Games (Unreal Engine) and Unity announced business model changes and strategic shifts, which could be related with my industry transformation article
From my perspective, the industry is gradually shifting from AAA productions with massive budgets toward AA and indie projects, diversifying revenue streams. This trend could have significant implications for engines like Unreal and Unity, as they are the backbone for both high-end and mid-scale development.
Wrapping Up
As always, my goal with this newsletter is to give you a data-driven, honest look at where the industry stands—so you can spot patterns, understand the changes, and maybe even find inspiration for your own projects.
I truly believe the value of your solo (or team) gamedev project isn’t defined only by game feel, level design, aesthetics or technology. It also depends on understanding the context you’re stepping into—and that’s the mission of gamedevpills.com.
